SCPS COVID-19 HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDANCE - UPDATED 8/7/21

Seminole County Public Schools Health and Safety Guidance 2021-2022 PDF - Click Here
August 7, 2021

Dear SCPS Families & Staff,

Because of the recent increase in COVID-19 infections, largely due to the spread of the COVID-19 delta variant, on August 6, 2021 the Florida Department of Health adopted an emergency rule regarding COVID-19 protocols in public schools, including protocols regarding face covering and mask use in public schools.   That rule provides that parents must be given an opt out choice if face coverings are required by the school district.

In discussion with our local Department of Health and in alignment with the new rule and CDC guidance regarding mitigation measures for controlling the spread of COVID-19, Superintendent Beamon is implementing a face covering/mask requirement for all students unless the parent chooses to opt out of the requirement.    Parents can opt out by sending a written note with their student on the first day of school such as “I am opting out of the facial covering/mask requirement for (student’s name)” with the parent’s signature.  The student may give the note to the teacher.  This procedure is effective for 30 days, beginning Tuesday, August 10th.  We will continue to collaborate with our local health department and local experts to review the procedure before the 30 days have expired.  The district’s website has details and frequently asked questions about the face covering requirement:  click here

Please know the District will continue to provide the many other layers of COVID-19 mitigation protocols that were in place last year.  We will continue to provide your children and our staff with safe learning and working environments.

Thank you.  We are excited to start a new school year!

August 5, 2021

Dear SCPS Families and Staff,

Based on the information from the Seminole County Emergency Management Department, our community continues to see an increase in the positivity rate for COVID-19 cases, which are fueled by the Delta variant. In collaboration with Seminole UniServ, which includes Seminole Education Association, Inc. (SEA), Seminole Educational Clerical Association, Inc. (SECA), Seminole County School Bus Drivers Association, Inc. (SCSBDA) and the Non-Instructional Personnel of Seminole County School Board, Inc. (NIPSCO), it is imperative that we take mitigating precautions in the interest of student and employee health and safety.
Therefore, until further notice, these procedures will be implemented as follows:

•    Employee Face Coverings: Effective Friday, August 6th, all employees will be required to wear a protective face covering while indoors on property owned, leased or operated by the District, including riding in buses and other approved transportation provided by the District. Employees must comply with face covering requirements for the health and safety of themselves, their colleagues, students, and others. Procedures will be developed to reasonably implement the face covering requirement including, but not limited to designating types of face coverings.

•    Vendors & Contractors Face Coverings: Effective Friday, August 6th, all vendors and contractors will be required to wear a face covering while indoors on property owned, leased or operated by the District, including riding buses and other approved transportation provided by the District. Procedures will be developed to reasonably implement the face covering requirement including, but not limited to designating types of face coverings.

•    Campus Visitors: Effective Tuesday, August 10th through Tuesday, August 24th, visitors will temporarily not be allowed on any Seminole County Public School campus during standard operating school hours. As the circumstances around the COVID-19 Delta variant fluctuate, at the end of the two-week period this procedure will be reassessed to determine next steps as we continue to monitor and navigate the situation.

We are excited to welcome students to campuses on Tuesday, August 10th and look forward to serving our families. We encourage parents to consider the use of face coverings for their students. For parents who wish for their student to wear a mask but are unable to provide one, schools will have a supply of masks available. Thank you for your support and cooperation as we navigate this fluid situation together.

Respectfully,
Serita D. Beamon
Superintendent
